Italian Prepositions CON, SU, PER, TRA/FRA: The Complete Guide

Italian has eight simple prepositions — we already covered DI, A, DA, IN. Today it’s the other four: CON, SU, PER, TRA and FRA. Here’s each one broken down with its main uses and real examples.
CON in Italian: company, tool, manner
1. CON for company
Used when you do something together with someone else.
- Esco con i miei amici. — “I’m going out with my friends.”
- Vado al cinema con mia sorella. — “I’m going to the movies with my sister.”
- Lavoro con una collega simpatica. — “I work with a nice colleague.”
2. CON for the tool or instrument
What you use to do something.
- Scrivo con la penna. — “I write with a pen.”
- Mangio con il cucchiaio. — “I eat with a spoon.”
- Apro la porta con la chiave. — “I open the door with the key.”
3. CON for manner
How you do something.
- Parlo con calma. — “I speak calmly.”
- Risponde con gentilezza. — “He/she replies kindly.”
- Fa tutto con cura. — “He/she does everything carefully.”
Note: CON normally doesn’t combine with the definite article — you simply say con il, con la, con le, with no contracted form (unlike DI, A, DA, IN, SU).
SU in Italian: position, topic, approximation
1. SU for position (a synonym of “on top of”)
- Il libro è sul tavolo. — “The book is on the table.”
- Il gatto è sul divano. — “The cat is on the sofa.”
- Le chiavi sono sulla scrivania. — “The keys are on the desk.”
2. SU for the topic of something
- Ho letto un articolo sul clima. — “I read an article about the climate.”
- C’è un documentario sulla storia di Roma. — “There’s a documentary about the history of Rome.”
- Hai informazioni su questo ristorante? — “Do you have information about this restaurant?”
3. SU for approximation
When talking about a feature or quantity that’s not exact, “roughly this much.”
- Il libro costa sui venti euro. — “The book costs around twenty euros.”
- Lui è un uomo sui 30 anni. — “He’s a man of about 30.”
SU + article — the contracted forms

1. PER for purpose
Why you do something.
- Studio per imparare l’italiano. — “I study to learn Italian.”
- Vado in palestra per tenermi in forma. — “I go to the gym to stay in shape.”
2. PER for destination
- Parto per la Spagna domani. — “I leave for Spain tomorrow.”
- Il treno per Venezia parte dal binario 3. — “The train to Venice leaves from platform 3.”

3. PER for the duration of an action with a known start and end
- Ho studiato per due ore. — “I studied for two hours.” (started, finished, you know how long)
- Resterò a Londra per una settimana. — “I’ll stay in London for a week.”
- Ho aspettato per mezz’ora. — “I waited for half an hour.”
TRA and FRA in Italian: position and future time
TRA and FRA mean exactly the same thing and are fully interchangeable — it makes no difference which one you use.
1. TRA/FRA for position in space
When something is located between two or more things.
- Il bar è tra la farmacia e la banca. — “The bar is between the pharmacy and the bank.”
- Mi siedo fra te e Marco. — “I’ll sit between you and Marco.”
2. TRA/FRA for future time starting from now
- Arrivo tra dieci minuti. — “I’ll arrive in ten minutes.” (ten minutes from now)
- Il corso finisce fra una settimana. — “The course ends in a week.”
- Ci vediamo tra due giorni. — “See you in two days.”

Common mistakes with CON, SU, PER, TRA/FRA
- Trying to contract CON with the article: unlike DI, A, DA, IN and SU, CON stays separate from the article — it’s con il, not a fused form.
- Confusing TRA/FRA with English “between” only: they also mean “in [X amount of time]” — tra dieci minuti is “in ten minutes,” not “between ten minutes.”
- Mixing up SU for position vs. approximation: with a physical place it means “on” (sul tavolo); with a number or quantity it means “around/about” (sui 20 euro).
